He was one of the five Sikhs who administered p&#257hul or Sikh initiatory rites to Mah&#257r&#257j&#257 Duleep Si&#7749gh at Aden on 25 May 1886. From Aden, Ar&#363&#7771 Si&#7749gh accompanied the Mah&#257r&#257j&#257 to Europe. In 1887, Ar&#363&#7771 Si&#7749gh was sent by the Mah&#257r&#257j&#257 to India as his accredited Ambassador. He carried with him five letters from Duleep Si&#7749gh, one of them addressed to the princes of India and another to the King of Oudh. At Pondicherry, he stayed with &#7788h&#257kur Si&#7749gh Sandh&#257&#7749v&#257l&#299&#257. As he reached Calcutta in pursuit of his mission, he was betrayed by a professed supporter of the Mah&#257r&#257j&#257 and arrested. He was sent to the Chun&#257r Fort where he was detained for three years. In government reports, Ar&#363&#7771 Si&#7749gh was described as a Europeanized Sikh whose hospitality requirements in jail ran to "some ice, brandy, claret and Vichy water. " He was released from prison on 15 December 1890, with permission to return to England if he so wished.

BIBLIOGRAPHY

Ganda Singh, ed. , History of the Freedom Movement in the Punjab, vol.
